Gemologist is looking for some serious graded stakes earnings as he prepares to take on a field of seven other three-year-olds in Saturday's $1 million Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. (Post time: 5:15pm Eastern; TV: NBC) The undefeated Gemologist won the G2-Kentucky Jockey Club last November at Churchill Downs, followed by a score against Allowance company at Gulfstream Park in mid-March to being his 2012 season. While his race record in impressive, he desperately needs graded earnings in order to ensure a spot in the starting gate for the 2012 Kentucky Derby.
Alpha, winner of the Count Fleet and the G3-Withers, will attempt to complete a perfect spring in New York with his third victory at Aqueduct. Alpha finished 11th in last fall's Breeders' Cup Juvenile but has rebounded for a strong start to his three-year-old season.
