The Pimlico Special has it's roots deep in the history of thoroughbred racing in the United Stakes. First run in 1937, the inaugural race featured the "Great Match Race" pitting Triple Crown winner War Admiral against the king of the West Coast, Seabiscuit. Over the years, some of the great names in horse racing have won the Pimlico Special, including: Citation, Assault, Whirlaway, Tom Fool, Cigar, Mineshaft, Real Quiet, and Invasor.
The race was discontinued after the 1959 edition, only to be revived in 1988, when Bet Twice won with Craig Perret in the irons. Since it's revival in 1988, the Pimlico Special has been "off" and "on", with the race going dark in 2002, 2007, and the last three years, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Finally, in 2012, the Pimlico Special is back this Friday (post time: 5:51pm; TV: HRTV).
The 2012 revival of the Pimlico Special features a very nice field of ten horses, including Toby's Corner, Endorsement, Nehro, Hymn Book, Mission Impazible and Alternation. Hopefully, this can be the re-birth of this once great race.
