Shackleford, set to post at odds of 3/1, broke sharply from the gate, set fast fractions and then held off Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Caleb's Posse by a nose to win the Grade 1 Met Mile at Belmont Park on Memorial Day. On a day where speed was playing very well on the main track, John Velazquez wasted no time in putting Shackleford on the lead after breaking from the gate. Shackleford clicked off opening splits of 22.77 and 44.73 through the opening half-mile, rolled through six furlongs in 1:08.52, and finished up with a 24.78 final quarter to complete the mile in a brisk 1:33.30.
To Honor And Serve finished third while Caixa Electronica rounded out the superfecta.
Shackleford is a four-year-old son of Forestry out of an Unbridled mare (Oatsee) trained by Dale Romans and ridden by John Velazquez. He has won back-to-back graded stakes races after winning the Grade 2 Churchill Downs on Derby Day, along with today's Met Mile
