2012 Epsom Derby Result: Camelot Makes It A Father-Son Affair At Epsom Downs

Odds-on favorite Camelot (GB), ridden by Joseph O'Brien (son of trainer Aidan O'Brien), ran down frontrunner Astrology (IRE) inside the final furlong to win the Group 1 Investec Derby by five lengths at Epsom Downs. Astrology set the early pace on the climb uphill after leaving the starting gate, dispatched a challenge from Thought Worthy as they rounded Tattenham Corner, and looked like a certain winner as he stretched his lead to approximately five lengths at the mid-point of the homestretch. But Camelot, winner of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in early May, was sent down for a strong final push by O'Brien and easily moved ahead of his stablemate in the final furlong to secure the first father-son victory in the history of the Epsom Derby.

Camelot is a three-year-old son of Montjeu (IRE) out of a Kingmambo mare (Tarfah). He is trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by the trainer's son, Joseph O'Brien.

Earlier on the card, Joseph O'Brien won the G1-Coronation Cup on St. Nicholas Abbey, making it an all-O'Brien affair in Saturday's Group 1 races at Epsom Downs.

The Group 1 Epsom/Investec Derby is the biggest race in England and one of the most prestigious thoroughbred races anywhere in the world. Run every year since its inception in 1780, The Derby is the ultimate test of staying power and class for three-year-olds on the flat.
