Weekend Stakes Results: Camp Victory Upsets The Triple Bend; Jeranimo Closes Hard To Take Shoemaker Mile

With the Fourth of July holiday nearly upon us one might thing that the stakes calendar at race tracks across the country would have been a little quiet this past weekend. On the contrary, we saw some great racing action across the country, culminating in a pair of Grade 1s in Southern California at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Camp Victory rolled past The Factor in the final quarter mile to easily win the G1-Triple Bend Handicap on Saturday afternoon at Betfair Hollywood Park. A few races later, Jeranimo used a late charge down the center of the track to win the G1-Shoemaker Mile over the South American shipper, Suggestive Boy (ARG), and betting favorite Little Mike.

In the Midwest at Prairie Meadows, Hansen dominated an over-matched field in the G3-Iowa Derby. Hansen broke alertly from the gate, set moderate fractions through the first half mile, pulled away from his rivals on the turn and cruised home by 10 lengths at the finish. Following the Iowa Derby, Fort Larned bounced back from his rough trip in the G1-Stephen Foster to wire the field in the G3-Cornhusker Handicap over 1/2 favorite Successful Dan.

In New York, Mystical Star set a slow pace through the first six furlongs of the G2-New York Stakes (1:13.18) on her way to a one length victory over Aruna at odds of 5/1. One race later and Teeth of the Dog, sent to the post as the odds-on favorite, stalked Morgan's Guerrilla through quick fractions (22.99, 46.12, 1:09.91), assumed command of the race at the top of the stretch and then held off Fast Falcon in the final furlong to win the G2-Dwyer Stakes. On Sunday, Derwin's Star surged past C C's Pal and Catinatree at the top of the stretch en route to an easy 3 1/2 lengths victory in the G3-Bed O' Roses for filly and mare sprinters.

Juveniles took center stage at Churchill Downs on Saturday with Circle Unbroken winning the G3-Bashford Manor at six furlongs on the main track. That race is looking fairly weak on paper, as the resulting Beyer Speed Figure is a tepid 80. The 2012 Churchill Downs Spring Meet wrapped up on Sunday with Guys Reward winning the final graded stakes race of the meet, theG2-Firecracker Handicap at one mile on the turf course.
