The entries for Saturday's huge, huge (did I write "HUGE") card at Belmont Park are out and it looks to be a fantastic day for handicapping. I've already summarized the field for the feature race on the day, the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Now it's time to take a look at the other graded stakes races on the card, primarily the G2-Kelso, G1-Beldame, G1-Vosburgh, G1-Flower Bowl and G1-Hirsch Turf Classic.
A couple of quick thoughts on the entries:
- Holy goodness, does that Vosburgh look like a tough race. Poseidon’s Warrior, Little Drama, the coupled entry of Sean Avery and The Lumber Guy, Justin Phillip… very tough field. Personally, after just a quick perusal of the PPs, I like Sean Avery a lot. Sure, it’s tough to run at a top level after only one race and a long time on the bench, but this gelding has some serious talent when he’s 100% and he’s clearly a six furlong horse.
I also like The Lumber Guy and an happy to see him back sprinting where he appears to be a much better colt than when he’s routing.
- The Flower Bowl will likely be a European affair for me: Dream Peace (IRE), I’m A Dreamer (IRE) and Nahrain (GB) look the best of the bunch to me. Zagora (FR) will get lots of play but the extra distance might not be her cup of tea.
- I’m normally a guy that doesn’t care for most of our classic turf males but I’m starting to get on the Point of Entry bandwagon. I don’t see very good odds for this colt in the Hirsch Turf Classic, but I love the fact that he LOVES going 12 panels. (3-3-0-0 at 1 ½ miles)
- To repeat something I wrote earlier and mentioned on the podcast: Royal Delta needs to show me something in her next start for me to get back on board as I hated that last race of hers (even though she finished 2nd beaten only a ½ length).
- Shackleford and To Honor and Serve square off in the Kelso. I've got to give the edge to Shack in a one-turn mile.
