2013 Holy Bull Stakes Results: Itsmyluckyday upsets Shanghai Bobby

Heavily favored Shanghai Bobby ran a strong race in his first race of 2013, but it wasn't good enough to prevent Gulfstream Park Derby winner Itsmyluckyday from beating the juvenile champ by a couple of lengths in today's Holy Bull Stakes. Sent to the post as the even money favorite, Shanghai Bobby broke like a shot from the gate and set relative uncontested fractions on the front end. Itsmyluckyday, the co-second choice at odds of 9/2, sat in third down the backstretch, content to stalk the top two through the first six furlongs. As the leaders entered the far turn, Itsmyluckyday pulled alongside the favorite and the race was on for the final furlongs.

Shanghai Bobby fought on well from the inside, and the top two were well clear of the rest of the field, but Itsmyluckyday took command in mid-stretch and would not be denied at the wire. A pair of big long shots -- Clearly Now and Joshua's Comprise -- rounded out the top four finishers.

The final time of the 1 1/16 mile Holy Bull -- 1:41.81 -- is a new Gulfstream Park track record.

Itsmyluckyday is a 3-year-old colt by Lawyer Ron out of a Doneraile Court mare (Viva La Slew), trained by Edward Plesa Jr. and ridden by Elvis Trujillo.

Update: As noted by pgunpgun57 in the comments, Frac Daddy grabbed a quarter which no doubt contributed to his poor performance.
