Orb ran by Violence, the tiring heavy favorite, to win the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulstream Park and, in the process, took a big step towards a start in the 2013 Kentucky Derby on the First Saturday in May. Speak Logistics rallied to be a well-beaten third while Majestic Hussar held on to finish fourth.
Majestic Hussar broke quickly from the gate and set extremely fast fractions running the first six furlongs in an unsustainable 1:08.85. Violence tracked the early leaders from the fourth position and then began to close in on the leader heading into the far turn, running right into the quick pace. After putting away the pace setter, Violence grew leg weary and was a perfect target for the grinding Orb in the final quarter mile.
The ride by jockey Javier Castellano on Violence is sure to be scrutinized in the aftermath of the Fountain of Youth as the move into the fast fractions surely compromised his chances at victory.
7-Sky Captain and 10-Falling Sky were scratched from the field the morning of the race.
Orb is a three-year-old son of Malibu Moon out of a Unbridled mare (Lady Liberty), trained by Shug McGaughey and ridden by John Velazquez.
