Black Onyx, sent to the gate at odds of 15/1, took command of the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes at the top of the lane and cruised to an unexpectedly easy victory at Turfway Park. With the victory, Black Onyx earned enough points to secure a spot in the starting gate for the 2013 Kentucky Derby but, and this is a big "but", he is currently not nominated to the Triple Crown. His connections will need to nominate him if they have dreams of running at Churchill Downs.
Morning line favorite Uncaptured finished second, while Giant Finish and Taken by the Storm rounded out the top four.
Black Onyx is a three-year-old colt by Rock Hard Ten out of the Cape Town mare Kalahari Cat, trained by Kelly Breen and ridden by Joe Bravo.
Earlier on the Turfway Park card, Crop Report closed from well of the pace to run by pacesetter Divine Ambition to win the Rushaway Stakes. In the Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks (excuse me, the Fathead Bourbonette Oaks), heavy favorite Pure Fun finished a disappointing third behind winner Silsita and runner-up Marathon Lady.
