Santa Anita Derby 2013: Entries, Post Positions & Odds

The final West Coast prep for the 2013 Kentucky Derby is the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on Saturday, April 6.

Harry How

Jerry Hollendorfer's Hear the Ghost, winner of the Grade 2 San Felipe in his last start, leads a field of nine in Saturday's $1 million Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. A son of Ghostzapper out of a Coronado's Quest mare (Rehear), Hear the Ghost broke his maiden over the synthetic surface at Betfair Hollywood Park last December before finishing second in an ungraded six furlong stakes race at Santa Anita in late January. He won the San Felipe in his first attempt at stretching out to two turns.

Flashback, the morning line favorite at odds of 9/5, finished second to Hear the Ghost in the San Felipe in a race where jockey Julien Leparoux got him a bit too closer to the pacesetter, Goldencents, going down the backstretch. He lost by only a half-length that day and will look for a more patient ride from new jock Garrett Gomez on Saturday.

Super Ninety Nine dominated the Southwest Stakes in a runaway gate-to-wire performance over a sloppy and sealed Oaklawn track two races back. He faded badly in the Rebel Stakes and is looking for a big performance on Saturday to get himself into the gate at Churchill Downs.

Louisville men's basketball coach Rick Pitino co-owns Goldencents; he's trying to pull of the NCAA/Kentucky Derby double.
