Defending Horse of the Year Wise Dan had to work a bit harder in the stretch drive this year at Santa Antia but would not be denied his second consecutive victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Za Approval took the lead at the top of the stretch but could not hold off the winner at the wire, finishing second by a length at the wire. Silentio ran a big race at odds o 31/1 to finish third.
The Mile began with Obviously and Silver Max set insane early fractions - running the first two splits in 21.94 and 44.47 seconds. Wise Dan, who broke just a step slow, raced several lengths back of the early speed but began to make his move four-wide on the far turn. At the top of the stretch the defending champ still had a bit of work to do but once he found his best stride it was simply a question "when" he would pass Za Approval, not "if".
Wise Dan was ridden by Jose Lezcano after regular rider John Velazquez was injured in the first Breeders' Cup race of the day. Lezcano had ridden Wise Dan earlier in his career.
