2013 Breeders' Cup Turf Results: Magician kicks in late for the win

Magician gets by The Fuge to give Europe a 1-2 finish in the Turf.

Jeff Gross

Magician (IRE) runs down the heavily favored The Fuge (GB) in the final strides to win the Breeders' Cup Turf and, in the process, give European horses their fifth win at the 2013 Breeders' Cup. The Fuge had to settle for a tough second and another heart-breaking defeat on U.S. soil following her trouble-filled third place finish in last year's Filly & Mare Turf. Indy Point (ARG) rallied to finish third. As it's been all weekend, the European horses are dominating the turf races at Santa Anita.

Defending champion Little Mike stalked the quick early pace but wilted at the top of the stretch when confronted by The Fuge.

Magician is a three-year-old colt by Galileo (IRE) out of a Mozart (IRE) mare (Absolutelyfabulous (IRE), trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore. Prior to running in the Breeders' Cup, Magician won the Group 1 Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh in Ireland.
