2014 Holy Bull Stakes: Entries, Post Positions & Odds

New, 17 comments

The march to the Florida Derby begins with Saturday's Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Matthew Stockman

Cairo Prince, a heartbreaking second by a nose to Honor Code in the Remsen Stakes in his last start, leads a field of eleven at Gulfstream Park in Saturday's Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes (Post time: 5:03pm Eastern; TV: HRTV). A winner of his first two career starts, including a 2 1/2 length score in the G2-Nausha on Nov. 3rd, Cairo Prince tasted defeat for the first time after stalking an absurdly slow pace in the Remsen, taking a short lead at the top of the stretch, and then surrendering the lead in the final strides to Honor Code. The Holy Bull is his first race since losing at Aqueduct on Nov. 30th.

While Cairo Prince's resume looks strong on paper, he'll face a fairly deep and challenging field in Saturday's Holy Bull. Among the colts expected to joining Cairo Prince in starting gate are:

  • Coup de Grace: an udefeated colt by Tapit with a two-for-two record and a nice win over the Gulfstream Park main track back on Dec. 15th.
  • Financial Mogul: Second to Cairo Prince in the Nashua but hasn't raced in almost three months.
  • Almost Famous: A dominating gate-to-wire winner at Churchill Downs in early November against Optional Claimer/N1X company.
  • Our Caravan: Just a maiden win to his credit, but what a maiden win it was; Our Caravan, 8 1/2 lengths behind the leaders in the early stages, closed hard to win by three at Gulfstream on Dec. 14th while going a mile and a sixteenth in his debut race.
  • Mr. Speakers: Trying the main track for the first time after two wins from four races on the lawn, including a win in the G3-Dania Beach at Gulfstream on Dec. 21st.
  • Wicked Strong: Third behind Honor Code and Cairo Prince in the Remsen.
  • Intense Holiday: Fourth in both the Remsen and Nashua, and fifth in the G1-Champagne.

Below are the full entries and post positions for Saturday's Holy Bull Stakes. Morning line odds will be added when released.
