Intello (GER) stalked the early speed, moved to the front of the field with a half mile to go, and pulled away from Morandi (FR) and Sky Hunter (GB) to win the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Coub (French Derby) at Chantilly this morning. The Derby victory helped to make up for his third place finish in the French 2,000 Guineas back on May 12.
Intello is a son of (surprise!) Galileo (GB) out of a Danehill mare (Impressionnante), trained by Andre Fab, ridden by Olivier Peslier, and owned by Wertheimer and Frere of Goldikova fame.
There were several American-bred (but foreign-trained) horses in the race, led by fourth place finisher Mshawish.
4th - Mshawish (Medeaglia d'Oro - Thunder Bayou (Thunder Gulch))
7th - Bravodino (Dynaformer - Angel In My Heart (FR) (Rainbow Quest))
9th - Dalwari (More Than Ready - Dalmiya (IRE) (Kalanisi (IRE))
Unlike the Epsom Derby, the French Derby is run at approximately 10.5 furlongs.
The ground at Chantilly this morning was rated "Good to Soft".
