Wildcat Red and General a Rod engaged in a duel that began on the Gulfstream Park backstretch and didn't end until Wildcat Red stuck a nose in front at the wire to win the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth. Top Billing, the 2/1 favorite at post time, made a big move from well back of the leaders at the top of the stretch but could only muster up a spot in the trifecta. East Hall, a huge 72/1 long shot, finished fourth to complete the superfecta.
Wildcat Red and General a Rod both broke cleanly from the gate and dueled into the first turn, pulling two to three lengths clear of the field before the pair had settled on the backstretch run. From there they clicked off splits of 23.03 and 46.24 through the half, and 1:10.13 for six furlongs. On the far turn, the field began to shuffle behind the leaders, including a big move by favorite Top Billing to put him within striking distance of the top two, but Wildcat Red and General a Rod never faltered in the stretch.
Wildcat Red is a three-year-old colt by D'wildcat out of a Miner's Mark mare (Racene), trained by Jose Garoffalo, and ridden by Luis Saez. With his victory in the Fountain of Youth, Wildcat Red picked up 50 points towards a spot in the starting gate at the 2014 Kentucky Derby.
