2014 Gotham Stakes Results: Samraat beats Uncle Sigh again

New, 5 comments

A fantastic three-horse battle in the stretch of the Gotham goes to Samraat.

Mike Stobe

Samraat, Uncle Sigh, and early pace setter In Trouble, engaged in a stretch-long duel with Samraat edging by Uncle Sigh in the final half furlong to win the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct. Uncle Sigh duplicated his second place finish to Samraat in the Withers by holding on to second. In Trouble, putting up a gutty run from the rail with two quality colts to his outside, held gamely for third. Financial Mogul finished fourth but was well back of the top three at the wire.

There was an inquiry following the conclusion of the race after Samraat and Uncle Sigh engaged in some bumping in deep stretch. The stewards made no changes to the results.

Samraat is a three-year-old colt by Noble Causeway out of a Indian Charlie mare (Little Indian), trained by Richard Violette, and ridden by Jose Oriz, Jr. With his victory in the Gotham, Samraat picks up an additional 50 points towards a spot in the starting gate for the 2014 Kentucky Derby.
