Orb, using a strong late run down the middle of the sloppy Churchill Downs track, won the 2013 Kentucky Derby for Hall of Famer trainer Shug McGuaghy. Golden Soul ran a huge race to finish second, Revolutionary finished third, Normandy Invasion rounded out the superfecta.
Revolutionary and Calvin Borel garnered most of the attention from the Derby betting public, dropping from morning lines odds of 10/1 to 5/1 by post time.
Orb is a three-year-old colt by Malibu Moon out of a Unbridled mare (Lady Liberty), trained by Shug McGaughey and ridden by the hottest jockey in America, Joel Rosario.
Steady rain during the day left the Churchill Downs main track rated "Sloppy" for much of the Derby under card. The rain let up a bit in the hour before the start of the feature race on the card but the track was still quite wet.
