Princess of Sylmar made a strong late run down the middle of the Churchill Downs main track to pass Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Beholder to win the 2013 Kentucky Oaks. Unlimited Budget finished third while Dreaming of Julia finished fourth.
Midnight Lucky and Beholder contested the early pace through rapid splits of 22.84 and 46.79. Unlimited Budget and Silsita stalked from just off the pace, while the favorite, Dreaming of Julia, languished at the read of the field after getting bumped around at the start. At the top of the stretch, Midnight Lucky and Silsita gave way and Beholder took command of the race. Unlimited Budge commenced a run but didn't have the final kick necessary to get to the front. Inside the final furlong, Princess of Sylmar kept grinding and grinding towards the front, eventually overtaking Beholder in the shadow of the wire.
Flash Gray scratched from the Oaks earlier in the week, leaving a field of ten fillies in the starting gate.
Princess of Sylmar is a three-year-old filly by Majestic Warrior out of a Cetienus mare (Storm Dixie), trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Mike Smith.
