Game On Dude took the lead quickly after leaving the gate, clicked off rapid splits of 22.67 and 45.47 through the opening half mile while running his rivals into the ground, and then held off a challenge of Will Take Charge in the stretch en route to winning his third Santa Anita Handicap. Will Take Charge was a clear second, while Blingo and well-beaten Mucho Macho Man rounded out the top four finishers.
Race favorites Mucho Macho Man and Will Take Charge stalked the early speed of Game On Dude and Hear the Ghost, but the rapid splits took away all of their late-running punch. Hear the Ghost couldn't keep up with Game On Dude and dropped off the pace at the end of the backstretch, while Mucho Macho Man was finished at the top of the lane. Will Take Charge appeared to be in position to reel in the leader as the pair entered the final quarter mile but the his typical strong late kick was neutralized due to the fact he had to sit closer to a fast pace.
Game On Dude is a seven-year-old gelding by Awesome Again out of a Devil His Due mare (Wordly Pleasure), trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Mike Smith. With his victory in the Big Cap, Game On Dude has now earned over $6 million in his 31 race career.
